Wallpaper Estimation

Special circumstances (cathedral ceilings, stairways, etc.) will need a professional estimate.  Exact estimates can be obtained from where you intend to purchase your wallpaper, or if a professional will be doing the installation, they will provide this service.

Below are two ways to estimate how much wallpaper you will need.  The first method calculates for single roll coverage, and the second for double roll coverage.  Either one will give you an accurate measurement.  Keep in mind that wallpaper patterns with a significant drop match (24 inches or greater) will require additional wallpaper to be ordered, and that most wallpaper comes sold in double rolls.  Ensure you specify either single or double rolls when ordering.

Estimation method for single rolls

The first thing you need is an accurate measurement of the walls that are to be covered.  Use a yardstick or steel tape measure. Measure in feet rounding up to the next half or whole foot.  Below is a diagram showing a generic room to illustrate how this estimation takes place.  First, add together the length of every wall that will be covered then, multiply this number by your ceiling height.

 Estimation Example 20' + 20' + 15' + 15' = 70' room circumference 70' x 8' ceiling height = 560 sq. feet 560 / 25 = 22.4 rolls 23 rolls is how much to order

Divide this figure by 25, the number of square feet in a single roll of wallpaper.  Round any fractions up.  This gives you the number of single rolls needed.  Note that the pattern repeat, rooms of unusual size or shape, greater than normal wastage during hanging, or other special circumstances may affect the amount needed.  Please contact a professional to calculate your exact wallpaper needs based on the pattern you select and your room geometry.

Estimation method for double rolls

Measure the distance around the perimeter of your room. If there are any window or door openings, simply measure right over them. Measure the height of the room. Use the chart below to determine the approximate number of double rolls you require. A double roll covers approximately 44 square feet after pattern matching.

 Distance around room Ceiling height in feet 8' 9' 10' 11' 12' 10' 2 2 3 3 3 20' 4 4 5 5 6 36' 7 8 9 9 10 40' 8 9 9 10 11 44' 8 9 10 11 12 48' 9 10 11 12 14 52' 10 11 12 13 15 56' 11 12 13 14 16 60' 11 13 14 15 17 64' 12 13 15 16 18 68' 13 14 16 17 19 72' 13 15 17 18 20 76' 14 16 18 19 21 Number of double rolls needed

For applications that do not fit on the above table, multiply ceiling height by room perimeter and divide by 44.  Round any fractions up.  Do not deduct any amount for standard size doors or windows.  If you have significantly large windows or any other large openings (fireplaces, French doors, etc.) that will not require wallpaper, then some wallpaper can be deducted.  This deduction amount is best left to the professionals.
